NREL Analysts Document a Decade of Solar Cost Declines

One decade ago, a solar PV module cost about $2.50 per watt. Today, an entire utility-scale PV system costs about $1 per watt.

NREL analysts have documented the dramatic cost declines in the U.S. Solar Photovoltaic System and Energy Storage Cost Benchmark report, including PV-plus-storage costs for the first time.

Using a bottom-up method, NREL analysts captured variation in system design and regional costs to identify key drivers of system cost, as well as highlight opportunities for future R&D to further reduce costs.
